Therapy For Anxiety

You know things are basically OK with your life but feel anxious and on-edge anyway. You’ve tried to relax and reassure yourself but that hasn’t really worked. Instead of being able to live the life you want, you find your day getting hijacked by worry, obsessions, procrastination and maybe even panic attacks. You feel powerless and ashamed because trying not to be anxious just seems to make it worse.

You’re in the right place - I specialize in helping anxious people find ways to regain control over anxious thoughts and behaviors and become more naturally calm. I help clients reconnect with their innate confidence and strength so that whatever life puts on their path, they can face it head-on and bring their best selves.

Some examples of what we could do together:

  1. Create your own toolkit for calming down and relieving stress, including ways to tap into the innate peacefulness within the body.

  2. Befriend anxiety and get curious about the job its trying to do for you so we can discover how we can help it take a much-needed break!

  3. Explore the emotions and subconscious beliefs underlying your anxiety so we can heal the root and help make you more calm by default

My approach, in-depth

My approach to working with anxiety is informed by an understanding of how childhood environments, societal oppression and traumatic events impact the mind and body. It is driven by a belief in the power of mindfulness, of human connection and of the body’s innate strengths.

Key elements of my approach to working with anxiety are:

  1. Establishing a safe, trusting relationship between the two of us and creating a space where you’re free to be your true self without fear of judgement. So many people with anxiety feel like they can’t share themselves in the raw and still be valued.

  2. Finding your existing strengths/resources and building new strengths/resources to help calm anxiety and give you a sense of control. I lean heavily on the power of the body to get us out of our heads and help calm us back down. We can broaden your repertoire of stress relief techniques and boost your self-confidence.

  3. Helping you deeply believe that your anxiety does not mean something is wrong with you! Anxiety is the body’s natural defenses being kicked on in places they no longer need to be and/or being stuck in overdrive. Typically, this is due to the way you were treated when you grew up and/or traumas you have experienced. We’ll explore the causes of your anxiety so you can stop blaming yourself and feeling embarrassed.

  4. Helping build your understanding of the real reasons you worry and why it’s OK to let go. Building the muscle of mindfulness is a big component of this process.

  5. Discovering the various parts of your psyche (such as your child and your self-critic), understanding them and pointing them towards your highest self for reassurance, guidance and love. This highest self becomes the parent you never had and your best, most trusted friend.

  6. Understanding if your anxiety is linked to trauma. If it is, we’ll work on resolving trauma in a gentle, yet effective way using mind/body’s natural abilities. You don’t even need to be able to remember what happened as we’ll work with whatever is held in the body. More on my approach to resolving trauma here.
