Is any of this true for you?

  • Struggling to sort out how you really feel or bouncing between totally different points of view

  • Doing your best to manage stress, worry and anxiety but tired of battling it every day

  •  Trying to manage PTSD symptoms but feeling overwhelmed and hopeless

  •  Seeing yourself stuck in bad habits or relationships that aren't working

  •  Feeling shame and low self-confidence that you just can’t seem to shake

Inner parts work can help you finally get clear on what's driving all these things and tap into what will bring about lasting change. You'll get tools to apply to whatever challenges life throws your way and finally feel whole.

How Can Inner Parts Work Help?

Parts work is a way of looking at your inner world that treats your mind like a family of different voices or “parts.” This style of therapy was first popularized by Richard Schwartz, inventor of Internal Family Systems therapy.

Everyone has parts. For example:

  • One part wants to rest, another says you should get more done.

  • One part feels angry, another says “don’t show it.”

  • One part wants connection, another feels scared of being hurt.

In parts work therapy, instead of pushing these voices away or fighting them, you get to know them. Each part is trying to help in its own way, even if it sometimes causes problems. By understanding and listening to your parts, you can:

  • Ease inner conflict.

  • Heal wounded parts that carry pain from the past.

  • Lead your life from a calmer, more balanced “centered self.”

Through building a respectful relationship with every side of yourself, you’ll be able to reclaim wholeness and live life freely.

Brandon Zahl, licensed therapist

I’m Brandon and I’ve been there

I know how confusing and frustrating it is to be stuck in negative emotions and feeling like something is really wrong inside. Getting fed up with living in pain is what drove me down the path of healing and why I am so grateful to be able to help others do the same. I offer an approach that:

  • Fosters warmth, teamwork and trust between us so we have a strong working relationship - something that research has identified as the biggest predictor of successful outcomes in therapy

  • Builds self-understanding and compassion so you no longer feel so broken and confused. What's happening is here for a good reason.

  • Goes deeper than a traditional Internal Family Systems-based approach by incorporating the body. This helps you get more clarity on your internal world and more effectively bring in the help you need.

From our very first session, Brandon helped me to connect with the core of the issues I was hoping to address in therapy. He has a gentle way of helping me to connect with my places of woundedness, as well as the resources I have within me to heal those wounds. I’m grateful to be able to work with him.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • I've helped clients heal from: physical, emotional and sexual abuse, neglect, religious trauma, narcissistic and codependent parents, medical trauma, being parentified children, high pressure parents, and more.

  • Not at this time. For Ann Arbor clients, I do have a waitlist going for in-person sessions.

  • It's true that things will feel different if we're just seeing each other through a screen and I understand if this is a dealbreaker for you. However, the main way we'll help you heal is through working mindfully with emotions and sensations in your body, which can be done effectively anywhere.

I've gone thru this kind of therapy myself - my online sessions were really helpful! Plus, I was glad to save all that driving time and to have my own space for processing afterwards.

  • I don’t take any insurance but your insurance company may reimburse you if you submit a request. More info here

  • I'm open to what works best for you - twice a week, weekly, every other week, once a month or "as-needed." However, for best results I would recommend at least trying out once a week and adjusting from there.

  • I’ve completed both level 1 and level 2 of the Sensorimotor Psychotherapy training program, which is heavily based on an inner parts framework.
